Beautiful photos of The Burren in county Clare, Ireland for sale as canvas prints, framed prints and more. During the Cromwellian occupations of 1651-1652 Edward Ludlow wrote of The Burren It is a country where there is not enough water to drown a man, wood enough to hang one, nor earth enough to bury him...... and yet their cattle are very fat; for the grass growing in turfs of earth, of two or three foot square, that lie between the rocks, which are of limestone, is very sweet and nourishing. Encompassing 250 square kilometres this beautiful area of barren limestone rock in north County Clare has its origins in the ice ages. This amazing landscape supports Alpine, Mediterranean and Artic plants side by side and is also very rich in archaeological and historical sites with megalithic tombs, celtic crosses, ring forts and a number of historic church ruins. The scenic villages of Corofin, Kilfenora, Tubber, Kinvara, Balluvaughan and Lisdoonvara are all contained within The Burren area
